Nel 1970 Elvis Presley si reca a Washington D.C. con l'obiettivo di convincere il presidente Richard Nixon a nominarlo agente federale sotto copertura. Presley si presenta senza preavviso alla porta della Casa Bianca con il suo amico Jerry Schilling e persuade le guardie sbalordite a consegnare di persona una lettera a Nixon, con la quale richiede un incontro privato. I membri dello staff della Casa Bianca Egil "Bud" Krogh e Dwight Chapin suggeriscono al presidente che un incontro con Elvis durante l'anno elettorale potrebbe far bene alle pubbliche relazioni, ma Nixon non sembra essere in vena di assecondare la richiesta del leggendario cantante rock. Senza scoraggiarsi, Jerry e Sonny, il partner di Elvis, cercano di trovare un accordo con Krogh e Chapin: Elvis firmerà un autografo per Julie, la figlia di Nixon, in cambio dell'incontro con il Presidente. Prima di fare il suo ingresso trionfale, Presley viene istruito ampiamente sul protocollo della Casa Bianca, ma della cosa si disinteressa in fretta. Con sorpresa e stupore di tutti, i due simpatizzano, superando il reciproco disprezzo derivante dall'appartenenza a due culture differenti.
