Nel 1854, tre donne malate di mente vengono affidate a Maria Bee Cuddy, una pioniera forte e indipendente originaria del Nebraska. Nel loro viaggio verso l'Iowa, dove sperano di trovare rifugio, incrociano la strada di George Briggs, rude vagabondo al quale salvano la vita.
