    The barber Benjamin Barker is unjustly arrested, condemned and forced into a life of hard labor in Australia by Judge Turpin, who longs for the beautiful and virtuous wife of Barker, Lucy.
    Returning after 15 years, after escaping from a penal colony, Barker adopts the name of Sweeney Todd and says goodbye to his friend, the young sailor Anthony Hope, who saved him when he was adrift. Then returned to his old flat above the shop in Fleet Street meat pies by Mrs. Lovett. Following the discovery of the true identity of the man, the woman tells him that after his arrest Turpin raped his wife and that she suffered humiliation as a result decided to poison herself, and so he kidnapped his daughter Johanna Turpin becoming the guardian . He learned this news, Todd evidence a desire for revenge and decides to reopen his old barber shop upstairs.
    Anthony meanwhile, wanders the streets of London, to the window and sees Johanna: immediately falls in love with her. This attraction causes a clash with Turpin and the Messiah Bamford (Timothy Spall), who beat Anthony and the threat of more violence if he were to get back.

    Il barbiere Benjamin Barker viene ingiustamente arrestato, condannato e obbligato ad una vita di duro lavoro in Australia dal Giudice Turpin, il quale brama la bella e virtuosa moglie di Barker, Lucy.
    Ritornato dopo 15 anni, dopo essere fuggito dalla colonia penale, Barker adotta il nome di Sweeney Todd e dice addio al suo amico, il giovane marinaio Anthony Hope, che l'ha salvato quando era alla deriva. Ritorna allora al suo vecchio appartamento in Fleet Street sopra il negozio di pasticci di carne di Mrs. Lovett. In seguito alla scoperta della vera identità dell'uomo, la donna gli racconta che dopo il suo arresto, Turpin violentò sua moglie e che la donna a causa dell'umiliazione subita decise di avvelenarsi, e che così Turpin rapì sua figlia Johanna diventandone il tutore. Apprese queste notizie, Todd prova desiderio di vendetta e decide di riaprire il suo vecchio negozio di barbiere al piano di sopra.
    Anthony intanto vaga per le vie di Londra, e vede alla finestra Johanna: immediatamente si innamora di lei. Questa sua attrazione causa uno scontro con Turpin e il Messo Bamford (Timothy Spall), il quale picchia Anthony e lo minaccia di ricevere più violenza se dovesse far ritorno.
