In 73 BC, the gladiator Spartacus, freed from slavery, leads a slave revolt, which will be crushed by the Roman legions led by Crassus.
the novel (1952) by Howard Fast: in 73 BC the Thracian gladiator Spartacus promotes a slave revolt against the government of Rome, defeated a legion and heads south. Crassus is defeated by the owner of which six thousand crucify slaves along the Appian Way. As film S. Kubrick is a hybrid: too many paternity (screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and above all the producer-actor K. Douglas who initially hired the director Anthony Mann) and a lack of uniformity of style. Kubrick is just the reference to a notion of progress in the story of the "first revolution in history" is symbolic bearer. Belongs to the battle scenes and violence (which worked the graph Saul Bass), the combination of reason and passion in the main characters, the wonderful direction of actors, among which L. And Olivier C. Laughton. However, it is the best - and most adults - of the historical giants of Hollywood.

al romanzo (1952) di Howard Fast: nel 73 a.C. il gladiatore trace Spartaco promuove una rivolta di schiavi contro il governo di Roma, sconfigge una legione e si dirige verso il sud. È sconfitto dall'armata di Crasso che fa crocifiggere seimila schiavi sulla via Appia. Come film di S. Kubrick è un ibrido: troppe paternità (lo sceneggiatore Dalton Trumbo e soprattutto il produttore-attore K. Douglas che in un primo tempo aveva ingaggiato il regista Anthony Mann) e una certa eterogeneità stilistica. È poco kubrickiano il richiamo a una nozione di progresso di cui la vicenda del “primo rivoluzionario della storia” è simbolica portatrice. Gli appartiene per le scene di battaglia e di violenza (cui collaborò il grafico Saul Bass), la mescolanza di ragione e passione nei personaggi principali, la splendida direzione degli attori tra cui spiccano L. Olivier e C. Laughton. È, comunque, il migliore – e il più adulto – dei colossi storici di Hollywood.
