Melinda lavora in una concessionaria di auto. Un giorno incontra nello showroom un tipo strano che le viene presentato come Brian Wilson. L'uomo è stato il frontman nonché l'autore delle canzoni di uno dei gruppi più famosi in assoluto: i Beach Boys. I due iniziano a frequentarsi e la donna scopre così le ragioni del profondo disagio psichico che Brian sta vivendo. Hanno le loro radici in una gioventù difficile e, allo stato attuale, debbono confrontarsi con le devastanti terapie di uno psichiatra che ne è diventato il controllore assoluto. Ciò che i fan sicuramente conoscono della vita di Brian Wilson non è altrettanto noto al grande pubblico che ha fischiettato 'Barbara Ann' e 'Good Vibrations'. Provvede a colmare questa lacuna il film di Bill Pohlad che al suo secondo lungometraggio (il primo risale al 1990) dimostra di saperci fare con il genere biopic.

Brian Wilson is the creative soul of the Beach Boys, but he paid a heavy price for his talent. That especially shows during his peak artistic years in the 1960s, as his inner demons and obsessions trying to please his abusive father drive him to a mental breakdown that would plague him for years. In the 1980s, with Brian barely functional under the domination of the unscrupulous Dr. Landy, Brian meets and falls in love with Melinda Ledbetter. As their relationship grows, she observes Brian's crippling subservience to the abusive psychotherapist with growing alarm. Ultimately, she must take action with a love willing to stand up to oppression she cannot ignore.
