La regola del gioco è tratto dalla storia vera del giornalista premio Pulitzer Gary Webb, che negli anni novanta ha realizzato un'inchiesta che lo ha portato dalle prigioni della California ai villaggi del Nicaragua, alle stanze del potere di Washington D.C. Il suo lavoro investigativo, alla fine, ha rischiato di mettere in pericolo non soltanto la sua vita professionale, ma anche la sua famiglia e la sua vita. Gary Webb è un navigato e autorevole giornalista che si è da poco trasferito con la famiglia in California, dove lavora per il San Jose Mercury News. La sua carriera prende una piega inattesa quando la donna di un grosso trafficante di coca, Coral Baca (Paz Vega), gli consegna una trascrizione del Gran Giurì che rivela un collegamento tra i servizi segreti statunitensi e il traffico di cocaina dal Sudamerica.
