Nei primi anni dell'ottocento, arriva in Australia il figlio del governatore inglese, il giovane Charles Adare. Viene subito invitato in casa di un ricco proprietario del luogo Sam Flusky che, in realtà, è un ex galeotto, sposato con una donna bellissima, Lady Henrietta che ha alle spalle una storia tristissima. Nata in una famiglia nobile si era innamorata di Sam, allora stalliere di suo padre e lo aveva sposato di nascosto. Il fratello di lei per reagire all'onta, aveva tentato di ucciderla ma era stato colpito a morte dal cognato intervenuto in difesa di Henrietta. Per questo era stato deportato in Australia dove la moglie lo aveva seguito. Ma tutte queste vicissitudini li hanno resi estranei l'uno all'altra e lei per sopportare la propria condizione infelice cerca rifugio nell' alcool. Charles riesce a far guarire Henrietta ma scatena la gelosia del marito che durante un' accesa discussione lo ferisce gravemente. Sam pensa ormai di dover trascorrere il resto dei suoi giorni in prigione ed invece?…

In 1831, Irishman Charles Adare travels to Australia to start a new life with the help of his cousin who has just been appointed governor. When he arrives he meets powerful landowner and ex-convict Sam Flusky, who wants to do a business deal with him. Whilst attending a dinner party at Flusky's house, Charles meets Flusky's wife Henrietta who he had known as a child back in Ireland. Henrietta is an alcoholic and seems to be on the verge of madness.
