Il film è ambientato durante la seconda guerra cecena, nel 1999, e racconta di quattro destini che la guerra porterà a incrociarsi. Dopo l'assassinio dei genitori, un ragazzino scappa dal suo villaggio e si unisce al fiume di profughi dove incontra Carole, responsabile di una missione dell'Unione Europea. Grazie al lei tornerà piano piano alla vita. Nello stesso tempo, Raissa, sua sorella maggiore, lo sta cercando senza sosta tra i profughi. Da un'altra parte, Kolia, giovane russo di 20 anni viene arruolato nell'esercito. Piano piano la guerra diventerà il suo pane quotidiano.
