In this spoof of the TV advertising industry, Rockwell Hunter is the low man on the totem pole at the advertising company where he works. That is, until he finds the perfect spokes model for Stay-Put lipstick, the famous actress with the oh-so-kissable lips, Rita Marlowe. Unfortunately, in exchange, Rock has to act publicly as Rita's "Loverdoll", and Rock's fiancée Jenny isn't too happy about it either.

Rockwell Hunter è un pubblicitario impiegato in un'agenzia che lancia i suoi prodotti alla televisione. Sta per sposarsi con Jenny, la sua segretaria, e le sole preoccupazioni della sua esistenza sono l'educazione della nipote adolescente April e il lancio pubblicitario di un nuovo rossetto. Quando April un giorno scappa di casa con le amiche per andare a ricevere all'aeroporto la bionda stellina hollywoodiana Rita Marlowe, di cui è una fan scatenata, Rock ha un colpo di genio. Perché non usare la diva per pubblicizzare il rossetto? Ricevuto l'assenso dai suoi capi, Rock chiede alla giovane attrice di prestare il suo volto e le sue labbra alla campagna pubblicitaria. Rita, che vorrebbe fare ingelosire il suo fidanzato lontano, accetta, ma chiede a Rock che in cambio si presti a fingersi suo spasimante. Il giovane teme la reazione di Jenny ma poi, spinto dalla necessità, accetta. Rock diventa così l'uomo del giorno, presente su ogni rotocalco, e i suoi superiori lo promuovono prima vicepresidente, poi presidente della compagnia. Intanto Jenny, temendo che non sia solo una trovata pubblicitaria, lo lascia. Rock capisce cosa è realmente importante per lui nella vita e abbandona ogni cosa per tornare dalla donna che ama.
