Guido è un giovane ebreo che si trasferisce ad Arezzo con l'amico Ferruccio Papini. Durante il tragitto Guido incontra casualmente una giovane maestra di nome Dora, da lui soprannominata principessa. Arrivato in città, viene ospitato dallo zio Eliseo, capo cameriere dell'albergo più lussuoso della città di Firenze, dove Guido va a lavorare come cameriere. Quello stesso giorno, in municipio, avviene un litigio con Rodolfo, un arrogante gerarca fascista, ed entrambi da allora si soprannominano lo scemo delle uova perché Guido involontariamente appoggia alcune uova nel cappello del fascista e, quando Rodolfo lo indossa, si rompe le uova in testa diventando furioso.
