With Argento's trademark visual style, linked with one of his more coherent plots, Tenebrae follows a writer who arrives to Rome only to find somebody is using his novels as the inspiration (and, occasionally, the means) of committing murder. As the death toll mounts the police are ever baffled, and the writer becomes more closely linked to the case than is comfortable

Peter Neal, romanziere americano sulla cresta dell'onda, giunge a Roma per la presentazione del suo ultimo best seller: "Tenebre". Appena arrivato, si trova suo malgrado coinvolto in una serie di delitti, opera di un maniaco che, ispirandosi al suo romanzo, uccide alcune donne ree, secondo il suo distorto giudizio, di infamanti aberrazioni. Anche Neal si mette ad indagare per suo conto, e viene colpito dall'assassino proprio mentre questo fa un'altra vittima. Ben presto si scopre che gli assassini sono due, di cui uno, colpevole dei primi delitti, è quello trucidato la notte in cui anche Neal era stato colpito. Chi è dunque il secondo assassino? La polizia arriva a scoprirlo troppo tardi, quando questi ha compiuto altri due delitti: si tratta dello stesso Neal, la cui psiche era rimasta sconvolta da un trauma patito in gioventù, che lo aveva portato tanti anni prima ad uccidere una provocante e maliziosa ragazza (incubo ossessivo le cui immagini scorrono in frequenti flash-back lungo tutto il film). Il finale riserva ancora una sorpresa: Neal, scoperto sul fatto dalla polizia, finge il suicidio; quando il commissario si accorge del trucco, anche lui viene ucciso. Nell'ultima scena, Neal muore accidentalmente mentre si accinge ad uccidere ancora.
