When detective Eric Matthews is called to a crime scene of a victim of Jigsaw, he finds a lead to the place where he is hidden. Once there, he realizes that Jigsaw trapped his son Daniel Matthews with three women and four men in a shelter, and they are inhaling a lethal nerve gas. If they do not use an antidote within two hours, they will die. Eric follows with increasing desperation the death of each member of the group in monitors, while trying to convince Jigsaw to release his son.

Police informant Michael Marks awakens to find a spike-filled mask locked around his neck. A video tape informs him that he has sixty seconds to retrieve the key from behind his eye with a scalpel, but he cannot bring himself to do so and is killed when the mask closes. His boss, Detective Eric Matthews, is called to the scene by Detective Allison Kerry when a message for him is found. Initially reluctant to get involved with the case, Eric joins Kerry and Sergeant Daniel Rigg in leading a SWAT team to an old factory.

There they find John Kramer, The Jigsaw Killer, who is weak from cancer, as well as computer monitors showing several people trapped in a room. Among them are Eric's estranged son Daniel and Amanda Young, Jigsaw's only known survivor. A nerve agent filling the house will kill them within two hours, but Jigsaw assures Eric he'll get Daniel back if he talks with him alone until the game is complete. Pressured by Kerry, Eric agrees in order to buy time for the police tech team to arrive.

The victims are informed that antidotes are hidden throughout the house. One is in the room's safe, the combination to which is "at the back of their minds" with the order found "over the rainbow". Ignoring a warning note, Xavier uses a key on the door, which fires a bullet through the peephole and kills Gus. When the door's opens, the group makes their way to the basement, which has a furnace containing two antidotes. A tape for Obi reveals that he helped kidnap the others, which Laura, confirms when she recalls her abduction. Obi inadvertently activates the furnace, while attempting to retrieve the antidotes, and is burned to death. The next room they enter contains a steel door and a syringe-filled pit containing the key. Xavier, the intended victim, throws Amanda into the pit instead. She finds the key, but Xavier fails to unlock the door in time and abandons the group out of frustration.

Meanwhile, John explains to a frustrated Eric that after learning he had cancer, he tried to commit suicide by driving off a cliff. After his brush with death John found a new appreciation for life, and with the little time he has left, John hopes to inspire the same appreciation in others by testing their will to live. Having run out of patience, Eric returns to the monitors. At Kerry's suggestion, he destroys several of John's documents and sketches, but fails to get a reaction. As the tech team arrives, John reveals that the other seven victims were framed for various crimes by Eric, and Daniel will be in danger if his identity is discovered.

In the safe room, Xavier finds a colored number on Gus's neck. With the answer to the clue, Xavier kills Jonas for his number and begins hunting the others. Meanwhile, Laura finds a clue which leads to the others discovering Daniel's identity. Just then Laura succumbs to the gas, having been the most affected. Amanda and Addison abandon Daniel, but Amanda quickly returns after finding Jonas's body. Addison finds a room with a glass box containing an antidotes, but her arms become trapped in the bladed arm holes of a and Xavier leaves her to die after reading her number. Amanda and Daniel find a tunnel in the safe room which leads to an an underground bathroom. Daniel collapses just before Xavier finds them. Amanda points out that he can't read his own number, but he cuts the skin from his neck. As he approaches them, Daniel suddenly jumps up and slashes his neck with a hacksaw, killing him.

Saw II is a 2005 Canadian-American horror film, a sequel to 2004's Saw and the second installment in the seven-part Saw franchise, directed and co-written by Darren Lynn Bousman. Co-written with series creator Leigh Whannell, it stars Donnie Wahlberg, Franky G, Dina Meyer, Erik Knudsen, Shawnee Smith, and Tobin Bell. The film features Jigsaw being apprehended by the police, but trapping the arresting officer in one of his own games while showing another "game" of eight people — including the officer's son — in progress on TV monitors at another location. It also explores some of Jigsaw's backstory, providing a partial explanation of his reason for becoming Jigsaw.
