Tre bambini vengono rapiti e uccisi nei boschi del Tennessee. Pam Hobbs, madre di una delle vittime, non si dà per vinta fino a che non vengono individuati quelli che sembrano essere i colpevoli, tre adolescenti ribelli del paese con piccoli precedenti penali. Gli imputati, socialmente emarginati, si ritrovano, all’improvviso, a difendere a gran voce la propria innocenza sia contro una comunità intera, sia contro le autorità che erano convinte che gli omicidi erano causati da riti satanici occulti. Ron Lax, un investigatore privato del luogo (Colin Firth), e Pam Hobbs (Reese Witherspoon), la madre di uno dei bambini scomparsi, hanno entrambi il sospetto che non tutto è come appare, e mentre la polizia inneggia ai crimini satanici…la verità può fare ancora più paura.
