Sammy e Terry Prescott sono due fratelli di Scottville, una cittadina dello stato di New York. Rimasti orfani da piccoli a causa della morte dei genitori in un incidente d'auto, i due fratelli sono molto legati anche se molto diversi tra loro. Sammy, sposata e divorziata molto presto è la mamma iperprotettiva di un bambino di otto anni Rudy, che coltiva sogni sul padre assente. Terry, invece, vive da nomade, è affascinante ma irresponsabile e autodistruttivo. Quando Terry torna a casa per ottenere un prestito Sammy cerca di aiutarlo a rimettersi in piedi e scopre che il figlio si è attaccato allo zio. La presenza del fratello stimola Sammy ad abbandonare un po' la routine della sua vita tra Brian, il suo opprimente capo, e Bob, il suo altalenante boyfriend. Ma Terry è troppo selvaggio per restare vicino al bambino e lo delude. Sammy, combattuta tra i suoi doveri di madre e sorella, si scontra con il fratello, la crisi finale rischia di allontanarli per sempre.

Sammy and Terry Prescott are two brothers from Scottville, a small town in upstate New York. Children orphaned by their parents due to death in a car accident, the two brothers are very close but very different. Sammy, who was married and divorced very soon is the overprotective mother of an eight year old Rudy, who cultivates dreams about his absent father. Terry, however, lives as a nomad, is charming but irresponsible and self-destructive. When Terry returns home to get a loan Sammy tries to help him to his feet and discovers that his son is attached to his uncle. Stimulates the presence of his brother Sammy to leave a little 'routine of his life between Brian, his oppressive boss, and Bob, her boyfriend swinging. But Terry is too wild to stay close to the child and disappoint him.
