Quando le sue figlie lo pregarono di realizzare un film tratto dal loro libro preferito “Mary Poppins”, dell’autrice P.L. Travers, Walt Disney fece loro una promessa, non immaginando che ci sarebbero voluti 20 anni per riuscire a mantenerla. Nella sua ricerca per ottenerne i diritti, infatti, Walt si trova ad affrontare un’ipocondriaca scrittrice, irremovibile nella sua decisione di non permettere che il personaggio della sua amata e magica tata venga stravolto dalla macchina di Hollywood. Ma non appena il successo dei libri diminuisce, insieme ai guadagni, la Travers con una certa riluttanza accetta di andare a Los Angeles ad ascoltare le idee di Walt Disney per l’adattamento cinematografico. Durante quelle due brevi settimane nel 1961, Walt Disney utilizza ogni risorsa a sua disposizione per convincerla. Armato di fantasiosi storyboard e divertenti canzoni, create dai talentuosi fratelli Sherman, Walt tenta il tutto per tutto senza riuscire a convincerla. Man mano che la Travers diventa sempre più irremovibile, Walt Disney vede la possibilità di ottenere i diritti, allontanarsi sempre di più. Solo quando cercherà nei suoi ricordi d’infanzia Walt capirà il senso delle paure che assillano la scrittrice, e insieme riusciranno a dare vita a Mary Poppins, facendone uno dei più teneri film della storia del cinema.

When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins (1964), he made them a promise - one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers …
