The Dark Knight Trilogy (2012) Limited Edition [RE-UP]

Much like Marvel’s epic Phase One Limited Edition that was released earlier this year, the value of The Dark Knight Trilogy will depend on your level of fandom for these films and whether or not you already own them on Blu-ray. The movies themselves (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises) are the exact same Blu-ray releases that were available previously, from the transfers to the original bonus content.

Those are all great discs, so if you don’t own Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy on Blu-ray, you might as well splurge for this collection. If you do own them, however, you’re going to have to ask yourself just how much of a Nolan Batman fan you are. The movies do come in a very pretty slipcase flip book though, with each section featuring movie-specific artwork that extends to the discs themselves.

Again similar to Marvel’s Phase One Collection, the Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collection offers one new disc of bonus material. Unlike the Marvel collection, this disc is actually worthwhile. In my review of The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray, I mentioned that the retrospective documentary included in that version felt like Warner Brothers was holding out for another release with a more comprehensive exploration of the making of the trilogy. “The Fire Rises: The Creation and Impact of The Dark Knight Trilogy” is just that.

Clocking in at nearly an hour and a half, this feature-length retrospective takes us from the sore state of the Batman film franchise after the disastrous Batman & Robin up through the release of The Dark Knight Rises. It covers everything from casting to screenwriting to marketing to fan reaction, including allowing us to see other actors (and of course Christian Bale) auditioning for the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne. However, it does gloss over a few key things like the death of Heath Ledger or Maggie Gyllenhaal replacing Katie Holmes, and also doesn’t feature interviews from any of the cast members. That said, generally this is an interesting and comprehensive look at how Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy changed the landscape of modern superhero movies.

The other new supplemental feature that is touted on this extra disc is “Christopher Nolan & Richard Donner: A Conversation” which is exactly what it sounds like. The two filmmakers sit next to each other and chat about Batman and Superman and the making of their respective movies for about a half hour. It’s not the most informative piece of content, particularly if you’ve watched or read either filmmaker talk about their movies at length in other interviews.

Still, seeing these two men chat about translating the superhero myth to the screen in their respective eras is a thrill for fans. Unfortunately, the other inclusion on this new supplemental disc – the IMAX sequences of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises showcased by themselves – is pointless, unless you’re just too lazy to hit eject and pop in the movie discs.

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime.
