Il romano Oreste Jacovacci e il milanese Giovanni Busacca si conoscono durante la chiamata alle armi della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Oreste in quell'occasione promette a Giovanni di farlo riformare in cambio di denaro, ma lo inganna e i due si rincontrano sul treno per il fronte, dopo l'ira iniziale di Giovanni, finiscono per simpatizzare e per divenire amici.

Seppure di carattere completamente diverso sono uniti dalla mancanza di qualsiasi ideale e dalla volontà di evitare ogni pericolo e uscire indenni dalla guerra. Attraversate numerose peripezie durante l'addestramento, i combattimenti e i rari momenti di congedo, in seguito alla Disfatta di Caporetto vengono comandati come staffette portaordini, mansione molto pericolosa, che viene loro affidata perché considerati come i "meno efficienti" a causa del loro limitato valore militare.

Dopo aver svolto la loro missione, si coricano nella stalla di un avamposto poco lontano dalla prima linea, ma una repentina avanzata degli Austriaci li "trasporta" in territorio nemico, dove vengono presto catturati. Sorpresi ad indossare cappotti dell' Esercito austro-ungarico nel tentativo di fuggire, vengono accusati di spionaggio e minacciati di fucilazione. Sopraffatti dalla paura ammettono di essere in possesso di informazioni cruciali sul contrattacco italiano sul Piave, e pur di salvarsi decidono di passarle al nemico. Quelli conoscono soltanto fegato alla veneziana con cipolla, e presto mangeremo anche noi quello.») ridà forza alla loro dignità portandoli a mantenere il segreto fino all'esecuzione capitale, l'uno insultando spavaldamente il capitano nemico («Giovanni Busacca all'ufficiale austriaco: " e allora… senti un po', visto che parli così, io non ti dico proprio un bel niente. Hai capito?! Faccia di m***a!"») e l'altro che, dopo la fucilazione del compagno, finge di non essere a conoscenza delle informazioni e viene così subitaneamente fucilato poco dopo l'amico.

La battaglia si conclude poco tempo dopo con la vittoria dell'esercito italiano che rioccupa poco dopo la postazione caduta in mano agli Austriaci, senza che nessuno venga a conoscenza del valore del loro sacrificio. Il loro sacrificio non è inutile: i loro compagni sono all'attacco e la vittoria non è lontana. I soldati pensano che anche questa volta i due amici l'hanno scampata; invece non sanno che sono morti per non tradire la patria.

La grande guerra è un film del 1959 diretto da Mario Monicelli, prodotto da Dino De Laurentiis e interpretato da Alberto Sordi e Vittorio Gassman. È considerato uno dei migliori film italiani sulla guerra e uno dei capolavori della storia del cinema. Vincitore del Leone d'oro al Festival del Cinema di Venezia ex aequo con Il generale Della Rovere di Roberto Rossellini e nominato all'Oscar quale miglior pellicola straniera, si aggiudicò inoltre tre David di Donatello e due Nastri d'argento. Ottenne un enorme successo anche all'estero, soprattutto in Francia.

English Synopsis
Italy, 1916. Oreste Jacovacci and Giovanni Busacca are called, as all the Italian youths, to serve the army in the WWI. They both try in every way to avoid serving the army. Giovanni bribes Oreste, believing to his false pledges to make him avoiding the army. But the destiny make them meeting again on the train directed to the front. Nevertheless Oreste stolen money to Giovanni they become friends and in first times are allocated to a secondary and quite front (village of Tigliano). Here they spend some months in relative peace and Giovanni finds time to fall in love for prostitute Costantina.

Recovery Volumes (.rev)
Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.
This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.
Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.
WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.
You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.
Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
