Subito dopo la liberazione della Sicilia, Salvatore Giuliano, già fuorilegge per aver ucciso un carabiniere, costituisce una banda ed entra a far parte dell'esercito separatista, sostenendo conflitti a fuoco con soldati e carabinieri. Quando questo esercito viene sciolto, Giuliano rimane isolato con la sua banda ed è costretto a riprendere la sua attività di fuorilegge. Uno dei fatti più gravi di questa attività è costituito dall'episodio di Portella della Ginestra, nel quale numerosi uomini, donne e bambini furono uccisi dalla banda. A questo punto viene decisa dalle autorità una guerra senza quartiere contro Giuliano. Uno dopo l'altro cedono i capisaldi della sua difesa e la mattina del 5 luglio 1950 il suo corpo inanimato viene ritrovato nel cortile di una casa di Castel Vetrano. Ma la storia non è conclusa. Gaspare Pisciotta viene avvelenato in carcere e altri mafiosi che hanno compiuto con lui i misfatti sono colpiti da mani misteriose.
