Il regista Alessandro Blasetti cerca a Roma una bambina per una parte in un film. A Cinecittà accorre una folla di madri tra le quali la popolana Maddalena Cecconi con la figlioletta Maria. Il sogno della madre è quello di garantire l'ascesa sociale per la figlia, di raggiungere per lei la carriera di artista alla quale aveva rinunciato in gioventù. Le aspirazioni della madre, che non di rado si dà delle arie davanti a tutti, vengono spesso considerate una forma di fanatismo dalle vicine di casa.

La madre fa qualsiasi sacrificio per garantire alla figlia l'aiuto, più o meno valente, di un fotografo, di una maestra di recitazione e di un corso di ballo, La protagonista non manca di spendere anche per il parrucchiere e la sarta, litigando col marito Spartaco, contrario ai progetti per la bambina: infatti, la famiglia è in difficoltà finanziarie a causa e soprattutto si ritrova in ritardo con il pagamento delle rate per la casa. Inoltre, Maria non mostra particolare interesse per la carriera, mentre il padre desidera per la figlia un'infanzia come quella di tutte le altre bambine.

Da ultimo, la protagonista ricorre addirittura ad un truffatore, un certo Alberto Annovazzi per fare raccomandare la figlia a pagamento, lasciandola quindi ammettere al provino decisivo: la bambina viene effettivamente convocata per una prova su pellicola, anche se il denaro è stato speso diversamente da quanto pattuito.

Avvalendosi di conoscenze personali, Maddalena riesce infine ad assistere alla proiezione del provino. Quest'ultimo si rivela mal riuscito, con la bambina che scoppia a piangere, mentre l'entourage del regista si sbellica dalle risate. Disillusa e profondamente umiliata, Maddalena si rende conto di aver sbagliato tutto.

La svolta decisiva si ha quando poi la figlia viene inaspettatamente scelta per il film e il padre sembra improvvisamente cambiare opinione sui progetti per Maria: Maddalena rifiuta sdegnosamente di firmare il contratto di scrittura per Maria, riconciliandosi invece col marito. Bellissima è un film neorealista del 1951, diretto dal regista Luchino Visconti.

When casting children’s roles, director Luchino Visconti (The Leopard; Death in Venice) is said to have been besieged by clamouring mothers, each trying to attract his attention to their child with cries of “Bellissima!”. In his film of the same name, Visconti turned his experiences into art, in the form of a satire on the motivations and machinations at work in the film industry, with the famous Cinecittà studios as a backdrop.

Maddalena (Anna Magnani) is a screenstruck mother convinced of her daughter Maria’s (Tina Apicella) star potential. Dreaming of a better life for her family – as a means of escape from the struggles of everyday existence in working-class Rome – she invests everything, including her last penny, into the dream that her daughter will be discovered at an open casting. However, on overhearing the film crew’s candid assessment of her daughter’s audition (in what Variety described in 1952 as “one of the cruellest scenes ever filmed”) Maddalena is forced to reconsider her views on the film industry and its world of illusions.
