The reporter interviews the great man's friends and associates, and Kane's story unfolds as a series of flashbacks.

Thompson then goes to the private archive of Walter Parks Thatcher (George Coulouris), a deceased banker who served as Kane's guardian during his childhood and adolescence. It is through Thatcher's written memoirs that Thompson learns about Kane's childhood. Flashbacks reveal that Kane's childhood was spent in poverty in Colorado (his parents ran a boarding house), until the "world's third largest gold mine" was discovered on the seemingly worthless property his mother had acquired. He is forced to leave his mother (Agnes Moorehead) when she sends him away to the East Coast of the U.S. to live with Thatcher, to be educated. After gaining full control over his possessions at the age of 25, Kane enters the newspaper business with sensationalized yellow journalism. He takes control of the newspaper, the New York Inquirer, and hires all the best journalists. Kane's marriage disintegrates over the years, and he begins an affair with Susan Alexander. Both his wife and his opponent discover the affair, simultaneously ending his marriage and his political career. Kane marries his mistress, and forces her into an operatic career for which she has no talent or ambition. Kane spends his last years building his vast estate and lives alone, interacting only with his staff. The butler recounts that Kane had said "Rosebud" after Susan left him, right after seeing a snow globe.
At Xanadu, Kane's vast number of belongings are being catalogued, ranging from priceless works of art to worthless furniture. During this time, Thompson finds that he is unable to solve the mystery and concludes that "Rosebud" will forever remain an enigma. He theorizes that "Mr. Kane was a man who got everything he wanted, and then lost it. Maybe Rosebud was something he couldn't get, or something he lost." In the ending of the film, it is revealed to the audience that Rosebud was the name of the sled from Kane's childhood – an allusion to the only time in his life when he was truly happy. Italian Synopsis
Charles Kane è un figlio di modesti genitori. Ancora un bambino, sua madre eredita una grossa somma di denaro. Questa deve passare al figliolo che dovrà venire educato, lontano dai suoi, in modo corrispondente alla sua futura posizione. Kane ha avuto dalla sorte un ingegno non comune, una forte volontà e un temperamento vulcanico. Divorato da una straordinaria ambizione, si getta nel giornalismo e ben presto controlla trentasette giornali. Vuol entrare in politica e sta per essere eletto governatore quando un avversario, gettando discredito sulla sua vita privata, riesce a stroncarlo. Divorzia dalla moglie, che qualche tempo dopo muore insieme all'unico figlio, in un incidente automobilistico. Sposa un'oscura cantante, ch'egli ama da tempo e, mosso dall'ambizione, vuol imporla al pubblico a suon di dollari; ma non vi riesce, benché abbia fatto costruire per lei uno splendido teatro. Fa costruire un fantastico castello e vi raccoglie immensi tesori d'arte. Lì si ritira a vivere con la moglie che, mal sopportando quella fastosa solitudine, l'abbandona. Egli muore solo, rimpiangendo la serena povertà e i giochi innocenti dell'infanzia. Ma chi o cosa è "Rosebud", tanto invocata in punto di morte?

Recovery Volumes (.rev)
Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.
This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.
Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.
WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.
You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.
Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
