Il Dott. Faust è un uomo tormentato che lavora nel suo studio sporco, che somiglia più ad una bettola che non ad un laboratorio di ricerca scientifica. L’incontro con il demonio, che prende le forme di un abominevole vecchio, ed il desiderio che nutre di possedere la giovane Margherita, lo porteranno ad intraprendere un viaggio attraverso il senso stesso dell’esistenza. Il protagonista diventa così un pensatore e un anarchico, un farabutto e un sognatore che desidera spingersi oltre, anche al di là del concetto stesso di “tentazione”.

Faust è un film del 2011 scritto e diretto da Aleksandr Sokurov. È stato premiato con il Leone d'oro dalla giuria della 68ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia ed uscirà nelle sale italiane a partire dal 26 ottobre 2011.

Il Faust di Sokurov non è un adattamento della tragedia di Goethe nel senso tradizionale, ma una lettura di ciò che rimane tra le righe. Che colore ha un mondo che produce idee colossali? Che odore ha? C’è un'aria pesante nel mondo di Faust: progetti sconvolgenti nascono nello spazio angusto dove si affaccenda. È un pensatore, un veicolo di idee, un trasmettitore di parole, un cospiratore, un sognatore. Un uomo anonimo guidato da istinti semplici: fame, avidità, lussuria. Una creatura infelice, perseguitata che lancia una sfida al Faust di Goethe. Perché rimanere nel presente se si può andare oltre? Spingersi sempre più in là, senza notare che il tempo si è fermato.

Professor Doktor Faust (Johannes Zeiler) sucht beim Sezieren einer Leiche vergeblich nach der Seele im Körper. Der Universalgelehrte muss feststellen, dass die naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse, von denen er in seiner Jugend geschwärmt hat, keine ausreichenden Angaben beinhalten, wie die Welt oder das Leben wirklich ist. Daraufhin sucht der Doktor in seinem ewigen Streben nach Wissen ein philosophisches Gespräch mit einem Pfandleiher (Anton Adasinskiy). So staunt Faust nicht schlecht, als er bemerkt, dass der eigentlich unattraktive Mann auf Frauen eine unwiderstehliche Anziehungskraft ausübt und auch sonst über besondere Eigenschaften zu verfügen scheint. Auch Faust ist nicht frei von den Fängen der Liebe. So begehrt der vielseitig Gelehrte die junge Margarete (Isolda Dychauk).

Doch das Liebesglück droht zu zerbrechen, als Faust während eines Streits in einem Weinkeller zwischen einem jungen Soldaten und dem Pfandleiher durch ein Missgeschick den Soldaten tötet. Dieser entpuppte sich als der Bruder von Margarete. Daraufhin schließt der Doktor einen verhängnisvollen Pakt mit dem Pfandleiher: Wenn dieser ihm zu einer einzigen Nacht mit Margarete verhilft, soll er dafür seine Seele erhalten.

Faust is a 2011 Russian film directed by Alexander Sokurov. Set in the 19th century, it is a free interpretation of the Faust legend and its literary adaptations by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Thomas Mann. The dialogue is in German. The film won the Golden Lion at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
The film depicts the instincts and schemes of Faust, and the world that gives rise to his ideas.

The film is the final part in a series of films where Alexander Sokurov explores the corrupting effects of power. The previous installments are three biographical dramas: about Adolf Hitler in Moloch from 1999, Vladimir Lenin in Taurus from 2001, and the Japanese emperor Hirohito in The Sun from 2005. Producer Andrey Sigle said about Faust: "The film has no particular relevance to contemporary events in the world – it is set in the early 19th century – but reflects Sokurov's enduring attempts to understand man and his inner forces." Beyond the themes within the actual film, the project also had a political dimension. Sigle said: "The film is a big Russian cultural project and for Putin is very important. He saw it as a film that can introduce the Russian mentality into European culture; to promote integration between Russian and European culture."
