Mike works on a boat in Acapulco. When the bratty daughter of the boat owner gets him fired, Mike must find new work. A little boy named Raoul helps him get a job as a lifeguard and singer at a local hotel. Clashes abound when Mike runs into a rival lifeguard, who is the champion diver of Mexico. He is angry at Mike for taking some of his hours, and for stealing his woman. However, when Mike sees the lifeguard perform a death-defying dive off a 136-foot cliff, he is inspired and eventually sets himself up to perform the same dive in front of thousands of people. Mike dives of the cliff, and successfully lands in the water, earning the lifeguard's respect. As the crowd and the lifeguard applaud, Mike leaves with Marguerita and Raoul.

Mike Windgren (Elvis Presley) è un ex acrobata di circo, a causa di un grave incidente che costò la vita al suo partner sulla scena, che adesso per lo shock subito, soffre di vertigini e si arrangia a lavorare come marinaio su uno yacht ad Acapulco
Lì conosce la bella Margarita (Ursula Andress), figlia del proprietario della barca, e si invaghisce di lei. Ma il padre non approva e lo licenzia. Un ragazzino di nome Raoul lo aiuta a trovare un nuovo lavoro come guardiacosta e cantante nel night dell'Hotel locale. Nel frattempo Mike è corteggiato anche dall'impulsiva torera Dolores. Moreno, campione di tuffi dalla scogliera di Acapulco, è innamorato anche lui di Margarita, e litigando con Mike, rimane ferito e non può più eseguire il programmato tuffo. Mike, per provare a se stesso e agli altri che non è un codardo, prenderà il suo posto tuffandosi dalla scogliera, vincendo così le sue paure.
