In this update of the 1930's comic strip, Flash is a football hero who is skyjacked aboard Dr. Zarkov's rocketship along with beautiful Dale Arden. The threesome are drawn into the influence of the planet Mongo, controlled by Ming the Merciless. Ming has been testing the Earth with unnatural disasters, and deeming it a threat to his rule, he plans to destroy it. He also intends to take Dale as his concubine. Flash must avoid the amorous attentions of Ming's daughter and unite the warring kingdoms of Mongo to rescue Dale and save our world.

Il Dottor Zarro, scienziato della NASA, notando che la Luna è ben 12 gradi fuori dal proprio corso, è ormai sicuro di quanto già annunciato e non creduto: un potente imperatore del Cosmo ha dirottato la Luna per distruggere la Terra. Con astuzia, Zarro riesce a trascinare con sé il campione di baseball Flash Gordon e la sua fidanzata Dale Arden. Proprio come previsto, il copevole è Ming lo Spietato, imperatore di Mongo, il quale, però, finge di accogliere come ospiti i tre terrestri. Ming vuole appropriarsi del cervello di Zarro e sposare la bella Dale. Sua figlia Aura, già sposa del principe Barin e capricciosa, si invaghisce di Gordon. Zarro e Gordon notano le divisioni, gli antagonismi e le rapacità dei diversi principi di cui vorrebbero servirsi per attaccare il potentissimo Ming. Grazie ad Aura, sfuggono all'annientamento; ma il tradimento della figlia di Ming viene scoperto e la stessa viene punita ferocemente da Kala comandante del sistema di difesa. Gordon, tuttavia, riesce a convertire Barin, capo degli uomini albero, e a farselo amico fedele. La stessa impresa convince Vultano, re degli uomini falco, a tentare l'impresa disperata di un attacco al regno di Ming, su Mongo. La coalizione riesce proprio nel corso delle nozze tra Ming e la disperata Dale. Annientati i cattivi, Barin ottiene Aura finalmente ravveduta e tutta la folla spaziale festeggia Flash con al suo fianco Dale.
