As a welterweight from the wrong side of the tracks, Dickie Eklund is the pride of working class Lowell, Massachusetts. Living in his shadow is his half-brother and sparring partner Micky Ward. It's part of the Irish pride to let Dickie lead the way and win a championship belt first. However, after suffering a humiliating defeat to Sugar Ray Leonard, Dickie plunges into a nightmare of crack addiction, violence and prison. His family's hopes are crushed in the wake of Dickie's demise. Like a real life Rocky, Micky fights on his own terms and pulls his family out of despair with his meteoric rise in the ring. Freshly paroled Dickie finds redemption training his little brother, now known as "Irish" Micky Ward, for his Welterweight Championship bout with Shea Neary.

Ispirato ad una storia vera, il commovente ritorno dell'improbabile eroe della box, Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) e di Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), due fratelli che devono affrontarsi come avversari per potersi riunire in combattimento, e vincere un campionato terribilmente difficile, rafforzando così i loro legami familiari.

La storia inizia con Dicky, un uomo che è l'orgoglio dell' intera cittadina - in passato ha combattuto contro Sugar Ray Leonard - ora caduto in disgrazia. Nel frattempo, suo fratello Micky è diventato a sua volta un puglie, la sua carriera è appena agli esordi ed è gestita dalla madre Alice (Melissa Leo). Nonostante il suo impressionante gancio sinistro, Micky continua a perdere sul ring. L'ultimo combattimento affrontato da Micky finisce quasi per ammazzarlo, e a quel punto viene persuaso dalla sua ragazza, Charlene (Amy Adams), a tentare qualcosa di estremo: dividersi dalla sua famiglia, perseguire i suoi interessi e allenarsi senza l'inquieto fratello.
Fino a che, a Micky non viene offerta l'opportunità di una vita: combattere per il titolo. Ma presto Micky capisce che avrà bisogno del fratello e di tutta la sua famiglia per poter vincere.
Sfidando tutti i pessimisti, Micky cercherà di redimersi e di riportare al suo angolo del ring Dicky, Charlene, Alice e l'intera famiglia Ward/Eklund.
