Venti anni dopo la morte di Gesù, l'Apostolo Luca incarica lo scultore greco Basilio, che ha liberato dalla schiavitù, di riprodurre il calice d'argento, usato nell'Ultima Cena, per potervi conservare il sangue di Cristo raccolto sul Golgota. Basilio lavora a casa del ricco Giuseppe d'Arimate sotto glio occhi della nipote Debora. Nel vederlo lavorare con tanta passione, la ragazza si innamora dello scultore ma lui non può ricambiarla perché innamorato di Elena, la bella assistente di Simon Mago. Questi è un malvagio stregone che ha intenzione di impossessarsi del calice per vedere aumentare la sua fama e il suo prestigio. Compiuta l'opera, Basilio parte per portare di persona il calice d'argento a Roma ma la carovana in cui viaggia viene attaccata da un sicario di Simon Mago, Mijamin, che gli strappa dalle mani il calice. Durante un sanguinoso scontro nel deserto, però, Basilio riesce a rientrarne in possesso e a raggiungere Roma con la carovana. Simon Mago non potrà trionfare e Basilio, che saprà resistere alle lusinghe del mondo pagano, troverà finalmente il vero amore.
