Dagenham, 1968. La fabbrica della Ford è il cuore industriale dell'Essex (Inghilterra) e dà lavoro a 55mila operai. Mentre gli uomini lavorano alle automobili nel nuovo dipartimento, 187 donne cuciono i sedili in pelle nell'ala della fabbrica costruita nel 1920, che cade a pezzi corrosa dalla pioggia. Lavorando in condizioni insostenibili, le operaie finiscono per perdere la pazienza quando vengono classificate come "operaie non qualificate". Con ironia, buon senso e coraggio riescono a farsi ascoltare dai sindacati, dalla comunità locale e dal governo. Rita O'Grady, loquace e battagliera leader del gruppo, diventerà un vero e proprio ostacolo, duro e insuperabile, per il management maschile e troverà sostegno nella deputata Barbara Castle che le consentirà di sfidare anche il Parlamento. Insieme alle colleghe Sandra, Eileen, Brenda, Monica e Connie, Rita guiderà lo sciopero delle 187 operaie
addette alle macchine per cucire, ponendo le basi per la legge sulla parità di diritti e di salario tra uomo e donna.
