Les années passent et Joe Tanto, pilote de course mis à la retraite contre son gré, ne peut s'empêcher de continuer à ressasser ses erreurs : les occasions qu'il n'a pas su saisir, et, surtout, cet accident qui a failli lui coûter la vie et celle d'un autre pilote. Si une seconde chance se présentait à lui, il la prendrait sans hésiter. Aussi lorsque Jimmy Bly, pilote renommé, connaît une période creuse et a besoin d'être secondé par un coéquipier, Joe met toute son énergie et son savoir-faire au service du champion versatile.

Talented rookie race-car driver Jimmy Bly (Kip Pardue) has started losing his focus and begins to slip in the race rankings. It's no wonder, with the immense pressure being shoveled on him by his overly ambitious promoter brother as well as Bly's romance with his arch rival's girlfriend Sophia. With much riding on Bly, car owner Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) brings former racing star Joe Tanto (Sylvester Stallone) on board to help Bly. To drive Bly back to the top of the rankings, Tanto must first deal with the emotional scars left over from a tragic racing accident which nearly took his life.

Beau Brandenburg, der Topfavorit der diesjährigen CART-Saison, hat mit dem Nachwuchstalent Jimmy Bly einen ernstzunehmenden Konkurrenten bekommen. Doch der junge Herausforderer kann dem Mediendruck und den Erwartungen seines Bruders nicht standhalten und bringt sich durch Unkonzentriertheiten in Lebensgefahr. Um den Jungen mehr Sicherheit zu geben, holt Teamchef Carl Henry den erfahrenen Joe Tanto ins Team.
