Mistrustful of each other at first, but joined in their common desire to end apartheid, the black activist and the white liberal overcome their differences to become friends. When Biko is killed by the South African police, Woods demands justice and, as a result, finds himself and his family brutally persecuted by the South African government.

    1975. Donald Woods, un journaliste blanc, est amené à rencontrer Steve Biko, un leader de la lutte contre l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud, avec lequel il se lie peu à peu d'amitié. Assigné à résidence, Biko est bientôt arrêté et meurt sous la torture en prison. Woods va alors s'efforcer de prouver que le régime de Pretoria est directement responsable de la mort de l'activiste…
