Ali Ozgenturk’s Ciplak (Nude) is one of the strangest films ever made by a Turkish director. Ozgenturk’s main theme has always been the collision of traditionalism with the modern world, and on the surface, this film seems to follow that path as well: It’s an exploration of two marriages that threaten to become unhinged when the loutish husbands discover that their wives have been posing nude for a group of art students.

But then Ozgenturk takes things further, and this becomes a self-reflective film about the nature of control, both within and outside the story: He actually introduces an unseen Director’s Voice that not only comments on the action, but also furthers it – and even occasionally interacts and argues with the characters.

The result is something akin to what might happen if Pirandello wrote a Turkish film, where the typical macho posturing is constantly undercut by the unseen, third-person narrator. It’s odd, to be sure, but the lush cinematography by Kusturica regular Vilko Filac, and an eclectic soundtrack that includes selections from Puccini, help to make this a particularly beautiful picture.

Alas, it was a massive flop when it opened in Turkey. Ozgenturk, who up until that point had been the darling of Turkish cinema and a regular on the international festival circuit, was criticized for willfully making his film obscure. (It didn’t help that the director actually gave some interviews where he claimed he was “trying to make a bad film.”) And he’s had a love-hate relationship with critics since that time. That said, I’ve always found this film to be strangely compelling, at least as an aesthetic experience – it’s far from Ozgenturk’s best, but for some reason it’s the one I’ve seen the most
