La pyramide du roi Djoser, la plus ancienne pyramide égyptienne – elle fut construite en 2600 avant Jésus-Christ – révèle sans doute les tous premiers pas de ce qu’on appelle l’architecture, comme pratique savante, distincte de la simple construction.
Le lieu où s’opère cette coupure est un monument funéraire, où la fonction symbolique prend le pas sur le simple usage. L’architecture, à sa naissance, s’affirme d’emblée non pas comme fonction mais comme signe.
À trente kilomètres au sud du Caire, à l’est de la vallée du Nil, Saqqarah fut la nécropole de Memphis, la première capitale de l’ancienne Égypte dont il ne reste rien sauf cet immense cimetière dominé par les soixante mètres de la pyramide à degrés de Djoser.
