Along with the standard DVD version, Crowe compiled an alternate version entitled "Untitled," which was a compilation of both released footage and his favorite deleted scenes. Running for over a half hour longer than the theatrical release, "Untitled" was subtitled 'The Bootleg Cut'.
ALMOST FAMOUS is inspired by director Cameron Crowe’s real life adventures reporting for Rolling Stone magazine as a teenager in the 1970s. Crowe’s alter ego in the film is young William Miller (Patrick Fugit), and in place of the Allman Brothers Band of Crowe’s era, FAMOUS has the fictional group Stillwater. A struggling writer for local underground rock papers, William finds himself with the opportunity to write for Rolling Stone and follow Stillwater’s tour, much to the chagrin of William’s college professor mother (Frances McDormand). Befriending the lead guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and falling in love with one of the ‘band–aids‘ (groupies with class) with the ubiquitous moniker Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), William finds himself on an journey that alters and challenges his innocence and also threatens his journalistic integrity.

In 2000 there were quite a few great films released, but my absolute favorite one of the bunch was Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous (yes, even more than Gladiator). It was just one of those films that I could watch over and over and was simply my favorite film of the year.
The movie was previously released on DVD, which scored pretty damn well here, but now Cameron Crowe has revisited his most personal film that takes the original 2 hours, 3 minute movie and expands it to a much more fleshed-out 2 hours, 42 minute "bootleg" cut.
Untitled is an extended version of the movie that was released theatrically as Almost Famous. What felt a cut short a little in the original is now extended to feel a little more complete, which is pretty much the entire story for this longer cut of the film.
It isn't just a scene here and there that has been added, but there are little things throughout the movie that have been extended. You get longer bits with Lester Bangs in the early moments of the film, extended moments in the Rolling Stone office, and several more minutes with the band on stage.
There is even a small story part throughout the film of William stealing free items from the motels that he visits along the trip. It's a minor addition, but it adds to the film overall.
However the real meat of the director's cut are the new scenes that have been added in amongst the small moments that were edited back. There's a nice scene with Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup in the ice room, an interesting interview with Stillwater by a completely stoned out DJ, and much more.
But the real question is, do these additions make the film better? Yes. By a large margin.
I loved the original film, but I wanted more. It actually felt a little cut short in parts, and this revisiting creates almost a whole new movie that is much more complete, yet just as entertaining and charming as the original.
If you still happen to prefer the original cut, you can find it on the second disc in this set, however the director's cut is a superior version of this excellent film.
The original version of the movie scored a 9 when we reviewed it, this director's cut is even better so there is no where to go but up.
