4 heures du matin, dans une centrale nucléaire tchèque proche de la frontière autrichienne. Suite à un grave accident, l'alerte maximale est déclenchée par les autorités. Côté autrichien, la population est priée de rester chez elle, mais il est difficile de cloîtrer les habitants dans leurs maisons. La panique s'installe. Le pays mobilise toutes ses forces d'intervention : il faut mesurer le taux de contamination chez les humains et les animaux, étudier la propagation éventuelle dans la chaîne alimentaire. Mais comment prévenir une population confrontée à un danger invisible ?
Andreas Prochaska met en scène un scénario catastrophe d'un réalisme saisissant. Ce réalisateur de polars a déjà mis ses talents au service de la fameuse série Tatort et de Berlin brigade criminelle (dont ARTE a récemment diffusé la deuxième saison).
Niederösterreich, Bezirk Horn, um genau 4.05 Uhr morgens: In einem tschechischen Kernkraftwerk wird ein Störfall der Alarmstufe rot registriert. Das Krisenkoordinationszentrum des österreichischen Bundesministeriums löst Strahlenalarm aus. Die Behörden reagieren professionell und sind doch mit einer Katastrophe konfrontiert, der man in keiner Übung gerecht werden kann. Es wird von der Wetterlage abhängen, wo die aufziehende Gewitterfront ihre hochkonzentrierte Radioaktivität abregnet.
Die Bevölkerung wird alarmiert und gebeten in den Häusern zu bleiben. Doch viele ignorieren die Anordnung. Panik bricht aus. Das Land mobilisiert alles an Einsatzkräften: Bei Mensch und Tier muss die Strahlenverseuchung gemessen werden, gegebenenfalls müssen die Betroffenen dekontaminiert werden. Die Bauern sind verzweifelt und können nicht verstehen, warum Ernte und Vieh plötzlich ungenießbar sein sollen. Man sieht und riecht doch nichts. Aber es ist abzusehen, dass in einigen Gebieten die Ernte vernichtet ist. Dann zeigen neue Werte, dass der Gau noch viel größer ist, als ursprünglich angenommen …
