In Medieval France a warlock is be-headed and his wife tortured and executed. Hundreds of years later an isolated group of people discover his head buried on their property. Soon it comes back to life, possessing people and using them to commit sacrifices and to search for the rest of his body.

This film was really worth the hour and a half! This one has it all folks: zombies, satanism, talismans, regenerated warlocks sleeping in coffins, cannibalism, weirdo country folks, a dash of lesbianism, a hint of necrophilia, and tons of nudity. If you are a fan of pulp horror, this one's for you. It is at times gothic, at times hallucinatory, and at times just an in-your-face festival of gore.

The structure of plot is a gleeful reworking of some mainstays of European and American horror, and yet manages to pull off a couple of real suprises. The direction is a bit slow, and the editing occasionally clunky, but all told, it keeps you watching until the end. Genre mainstay Paul Naschy is always a bit creepy to watch, and especially during this period… he just looks so much like John Belushi! He's in rare form here, playing the dual lead, and feeling up just about every female in the film. Whether he's kissing them or hacking out their hearts, you can be sure that somewhere along the line Naschy will manage to get a boob into his hand. And, strangely, it seems right. Naschy wrote the film as well, but he used his real name (Jacinto Molina)… just one more example of the twisted logic of Euro-horror pseudonyms!

Anyway, genre fans, take note: Exploitation is best served from those who enjoy it. This film is great because the writer/star clearly loves horror films and exploitation in general, much like his contemporaries Jess Franco, Lucio Fulci, and the rest. Enjoy it for all of the fun it has with the genre!
