A non-narrative, stream-of-consciousness form film. The film takes place in three distinct time periods: Pre-war (1930s), Second World War-time, and Post-war (1960s). Flashbacks, historical footage and original poetry of Arseni Tarkovsky illustrate the reminiscences of a dying man about his childhood during World War II, his adolescence, and a painful divorce in the 60's. The story interweaves reflections about Russian history and society.
My favorite film of Tarkovsky. A intense and profound movie that speaks to everyone's soul, heart and mind.
As my point of view, it's a masterpiece!
