Ten young directors did not part from their cameras for two months. The result was a chronicle of Russia's winter protests - a chronicle of those who make the political climate and those who are dissatisfied with the makers. We see people, their faces, their conversations, rallies, victories and defeats ahead of the presidential election. A living camera interacts with living heroes.

In the winter of 2011-2012, Russia found itself at a crossroads. Vladimir Putin seeks a third term as president, a position he “left” earlier to serve as prime minister. The continued consolidation of power by his party revives painful memories of the authoritarian past and eradicates the possibility of political neutrality. An independent newspaper sends 10 young filmmakers into this crisis to document two months worth of back-room meetings, large-scale demonstrations, electioneering gimmicks and spontaneous acts of dissent, covering all strata of society. The resulting film eschews prepared remarks from “experts,” instead offering a powerful and direct survey of the frantic political moment. With hand-held immediacy, Winter, Go Away! captures the passion and frustration of the opposition, the cavalier callousness of the established order and the confusion and paranoia of those caught in between.

    Reviews:

Winter, Go Away! is one of a slew of recent opposition-minded documentary projects that focus on protest movements in Russia, in which filmmakers adopt more and more journalistic subject matter, providing a counterbalance to coverage of events on state television broadcasts. Razbezhkina’s ten students offer a multi-observer glance of simultaneous events, often from the street level perspective of the handheld camera.

Roughly the first two thirds of the film focuses on the opposition, whereas a short ten-minute section gives voice to pro-Putin groups. The filmmakers defended this misbalance, noting that opposition groups were more willing to appear on camera. While the film includes substantially more footage of opposition movements, it by no means takes their statements at face value or romanticizes their figureheads.

In a review in Seans, Boris Nelepo called Winter, Go Away! a carnivalesque film, “slapstick with political content” (Nelepo 2013). Also in Seans, Mikhail Iampol'skii called the film a grotesque portrayal of the protest movements (Iampol'skii 2013). The film is often set up as a playful exercise in contrasting episodes, which leaves the viewer to interpret a middle ground. For example, in one scene, two journalists from Lenta.ru discuss Naval'nyi’s prospects as president, with one worried about his nationalist bent and his anti-Semitic stance towards Jews. She says to elect him as president would be “a real fuckup” (“eto pizdets”). The film subsequently cuts to a scene visually introducing Naval'nyi for the first time, showing him strike a friendly pose for the cameras while raising a badminton racquet.

[December 2011 to March 2012] in Russia, captured by 10 film school students and aggressively stitched together into a democratic jumble, each segment lasting little more than a minute, moving fast to cover as much ground as possible: agenda-setting meetings designed to formulate opposition requests all can agree on degenerating into shouting, a young man building stilts and testing them in his apartment while a nervous grandmother frets he's going to knock over her chandelier, disciplined cadres pretendomg not to speak Russian to avoid police scrutiny. Cops are everywhere, not even trying to justify their actions ("talk to our PR department" is the only explanation offered), and any anti-Putin activity's instantly denounced as the work of disloyal Russians, instantly dubbed enemies of the nation. "It is so hard for him to run such a big country with so many crazy people," a pro-Putin nun opines, closer in spirit than she knows to a particularly disgusted young man who can't swallow any of the opposition candidates. "Because of politics, we're going to remain trapped in samsara," he says of the country, forever doomed to authoritarian oppression in slightly new forms. "We'll never break the cycle of reincarnation." A bracing, bleak comedy about the politics of futility.
