The stop-motion magic of legendary special effects creator Ray Harryhausen is the highlight of this sporadically exciting fantasy-adventure, which pits cowboys against dinosaurs in the Mexican desert. James Franciscus and Richard Carlson star as members of a struggling Wild West show who discover their newest attraction in Mexico–a tiny prehistoric horse. Exploration into a nearby valley uncovers living dinosaurs, including the fearsome "Gwangi"-an allosaur that the circus folk capture for exhibition. But as every creature connoisseur knows, monsters in cages always break free, and soon enough, the beast is on a rampage.

T.J. Breckenridge leitet einen Westernzirkus, der jedoch nicht sonderlich gut läuft. Der Zigeuner Carlos bringt ihr einen Eohippus, ein winziges Urpferd, das eigentlich vor 50 Millionen Jahre ausgestorben ist und die neue Attraktion im Zirkus werden soll. Sie zeigt ihrem Exfreund Tuck Kirby und dem Paläontologen Professor Bromley das Tier, beide wittern sofort ein Geschäft. Eine blinde Zigeunerin offenbart, dass das Pferd aus dem verbotenen Tal kommt und dorthin zurückgebracht werden muss, will aber nicht verraten, wo das Tal ist. Daher sagt der Professor ihr, wo das Pferd versteckt ist, um den Zigeunern nach der Befreiung zum verbotenen Tal zu folgen. Doch dort treffen sie nicht nur Urpferde, sondern auch fleischfressende Dinosaurier. Der Gefährlichste wird von den Zigeunern Gwangi genannt. Sie müssen sich gegen diese prähistorischen Räuber verteidigen. Durch Zufall gelingt es ihnen aber, Gwangi zu fangen. Er soll im Zirkus ausgestellt werden. Bei der ersten Vorstellung wird Gwangi von einem Zigeuner befreit. Panik bricht aus…

A la fin du XIXème siècle, aux Etats-Unis, un groupe de cow-boys découvre et part explorer une mystérieuse vallée peuplée de créatures préhistoriques (animées par Ray Harryhausen), notamment un eohippus, un styracosaure, un ptéranodon et un ornithomimus. Après de nombreuses péripéties, les aventuriers parviennent à capturer au lasso un allosaure nommé Gwangi (lui aussi animé par Ray Harryhausen, le ramènent en ville dans une cage improvisée et l'exposent dans un cirque. Mais le dinosaure parvient à s'échapper, se bat contre un éléphant (également animé par Ray Harryhausen) et sème la panique jusqu'à ce que l'on parvienne à l'enfermer dans une cathédrale où il meurt au cours d'un incendie.
Cette oeuvre mêle le western et le film de monstres. La scénario n'est pas sans rappeler celui de King Kong (1933).
