The most popular and critically lauded of the cookie-cutter disaster movies of 1970s, The Towering Inferno set the high-water mark for the genre. Though the film's eight Academy Award nominations may seem laughable today, there's no denying Inferno's strength at tapping the era's sense of morbid paranoia. Irwin_Allen produced the film – as well as directed the major action set pieces – and he delivers the lavish production design, star-studded cast, melodramatic subplots, and life-and-death dilemmas audiences had come to expect in the wake of Airport and The_Poseidon_Adventure. Inferno stands out from the crowd mainly for its audacious sets and high-quality performances. The cast list is staggering. Spurred on by the overwhelming success of The Towering Inferno, the disaster genre went into high-gear for the rest of the decade, with mostly disastrous results. John Williams did the excellent score.

Das Unheil beginnt mit einer feuchtfröhlichen Party im 135. Stock eines gerade fertiggestellten Wolkenkratzers. Dabei sind der Architekt, der Bauherr und der Sicherheitschef. Noch während man in schwindelnder Höhe feiert, bricht im 81. Stock ein Feuer aus und das automatische Sicherheitssystem verweigert den Dienst. Binnen kürzester Zeit wird der Stahl- und Glaspalast zu einer kochenden Hölle. Ein Film, bei dem Sie den Atem anhalten. Perfekte Ausstattung und Technik vermitteln den Eindruck, als säße man selbst in dieser infernalischen Feuerfalle!

El arquitecto Doug Roberts, diseñador del rascacielos más alto del mundo conocido como la Torre de Cristal, ha detectado numerosos problemas eléctricos en la instalación del edificio y se lo comunica al dueño del mismo, el millonario James Duncan. El responsable es el yerno de Duncan, Roger Simmons, que ha reemplazado los materiales por otros de menor calidad. Simmons no aparece mientras el tiempo corre para la celebración de la apertura oficial del edificio esa misma noche. Pero al inicio de la fiesta, un incendio se desata en el piso 81 y pronto se propaga al resto del rascacielos. Atrapados en el salon Promenade (en el piso 135), quedan Duncan, el alcalde y varios invitados VIP. Al rescate acude el equipo de bomberos de San Francisco, liderado por el jefe O´Hallorhan. Pero numerosas explosiones provocan que el incendio se salga de control y no halla forma posible de un rescate masivo de las 200 personas aisladas en el salón Promenade. Corriendo una carrera contra el tiempo, O´Hallorhan y Roberts intentarán improvisar soluciones de rescate desde sus respectivos lados.
Con sus incoherencias y disparates, The Towering Inferno es una película de catastrofes que se deja ver y resulta entretenida. Al menos dispara secuencias a cada momento, de modo de si una resulta absurda no pasa mucho antes que venga otra escena que puede estar mejor. Pero al menos depara algunas sorpresas, con lo cual el interés nunca termina por decaer demasiado.
