A political murder mystery set in Nazi-occupied Poland and postwar Paris, NIGHT OF THE GENERALS follows a military investigator, General Grau (Omar Sharif), on his inquiry into a prostitute's murder that has unexpectedly led him to three prime suspects (Peter O'Toole, Donald Pleasence, and Charles Gray)–all generals in the German army. Two years after the murder in Warsaw, Grau is transferred to Paris, where he confronts the man he believes to be the murderer–who is busy framing one of the other generals for the crime. When Paris detective Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret) gets involved, more than one plot is uncovered in this tense drama that parallels World War II's mass murder with the individual actions of its participants. Director Anatole Litvak's film is based on the best-selling novel by Hans Helmut Kirst.

La note concerne uniquement le film. Avec un casting international ex-cep-tion-nel (O'Toole, Noiret, Pleasance, Sharrif), ce film, à mi-chemin entre le film de guerre et l'enquête policière, explore les sombres côtés de l'élite de l'armée allemande. Sur fond d'attentat contre Hitler, on découvre un général de l'ancienne école, tiraillé entre son sens du devoir et l'envie de finir la guerre, un général obnubilé par le complot qu'il a en partie organisé, et surtout, le général Tanz, campé par un Peter O'Toole magistral, soldat en apparence exemplaire par son courage, en réalité un névropathe qui fait froid dans le dos. En Varsovia, durante los primeros días de la ocupación alemana, una prostituta es salvajemente asesinada. Un testigo afirma que el asesino ha sido un general alemán, al que no vió el rostro, pero sí el uniforme. El mayor Grau es el encargado de investigar el caso. Sin embargo, sólo tres generales en Varsovia carecen de una coartada.

Mentre c'è chi prepara l'attentato a Hitler, un generale dello Stato Maggiore tedesco, sadico e assassino di prostitute, nasconde bene i suoi delitti. Girato senza risparmio di mezzi e con illustri collaboratori (dalla sceneggiatura alle musiche), il film, come risultato finale, vale meno della somma dei suoi elementi. Litvak tenta la carta dell'espressionismo senza convinzione. Sceneggiato da Joseph Kessel e Paul Dehn da un romanzo di Hans Helmut Kirst.
