The Flesh Triple Feature (Michael Findlay, 1967-68)

Findlay's breakthrough film was The Touch of Her Flesh (1967). He directed and starred in this story of a sadistic, misogynist psycho-killer who stalks prostitutes and strippers. The killings are done with imaginative devices such as poison-tipped rose thorns, blowdarts, a crossbow, a scimitar, and a buzzsaw.
The movie became a surprise hit, calling for two sequels, The Curse of Her Flesh and The Kiss of Her Flesh (both 1968). The trilogy, filled with fetishistic scenes of bondage, whipping, torture, and grotesque violence, was unusual for its time and presaged the 1970s slasher horror films to come.

Even though it doesn't reach the heights (depths?) of its sequels, "The Touch of Her Flesh" is one of the single sleaziest 60s exploitation flicks I've viewed. Its incredibly misogynistic and has the social redemption of a sewage pipe. Its simply put, one grimy little flick. However, when viewed as what it is, its also pretty effective. It never rises above a trash level, but its trash of the highest order. No wonder its one of the most infamous titles in the Something Weird catalog, and as I said earlier, the sequels only manage to top this one.

What makes this stick out from the pack? While "The Defilers" and many other roughies were certainly sick, there's a discomforting sense of conviction to the depravity on hand here. It has a consistently pessimistic and downbeat worldview. The film is simple and primitive, but wouldn't have worked any other way. Also, its more well-shot and directed than most sexploitation films of the time, and the killings are quite innovative. Plus, its not all depressing, because there's several wrongheaded laughs to be had at just how politically incorrect the product is. "The Touch of Her Flesh" is truly something you couldn't get away with nowadays.

"The Touch of Her Flesh" was pretty grimy, but its sequel manages to outdo it in every field. Its more depraved, more politically incorrect and offensive, more hilarious for the truly sick at heart, and considerably better made this time around (the slightly higher budget allows them to use actual synchronized sound, opposed to post dubbing). And while the plot is far from complex, at least there is a semblance of a story this time around. In other words, fans of vintage Grindhouse goodness will fall in love with this socially irredeemable piece of trash. However, both serious art buffs and especially feminists will quake in fear at it.

The Findley's "Flesh" trilogy is standard sexploitation from the time in some aspects, but its much more extreme and intriguing than many of its contemporaries. The bizarre sexual dialog is always hilarious despite the rampant misogyny thats bound to turn off some. My advice, don't take this trash too seriously (I'm pretty sure the producers didn't either). Also, its rather well shot, featuring some nice, Noir and expressionist style camera work. Plus, the murders are all very original. All in all, "The Curse of Her Flesh" is yet another trash classic in the trilogy.

"The Kiss of Her Flesh" is the most depraved and sleazy entry in the "Flesh" trilogy, but its also in my mind the least enjoyable. I'm not exactly sure how to explain this, outside of maybe the fact the films began to get rather repetitive and predictable by this point. The sex scenes in this one go on for far too long, as to be expected from this kind of film. The first half is mostly dull stuff. Fortunately, the second half loads on the sleaze, but by that point its a bit too late.

Maybe I'm being a bit too hard on this film. I'd recommend watching this before the other entries. It may actually be more enjoyable because it'll feel a lot fresher. Its the most degenerate and possibly the most misogynistic entry, despite not having nearly as much of the bizarre dialog as the earlier entries had. The killings themselves are startlingly original for this kind of flick, and stick out in memory. The rest of the film isn't nearly as good however. The low production values only enhance the sleazy atmosphere. As I said above, watch this before the other entries in the series and you'll probably enjoy it more than I ended up doing.
