Making of the Mob, is an eight-part docudrama that begins in 1905 and spans more than 50 years, tracing the original five families that led to the modern American Mafia, including the rise of Charles Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Benjamin Bugsy Siegel.

Part 1: The Education of Lucky Luciano (1906-1927)
The rise of the mafia in New York begins in the 1920s. Charles "Lucky" Luciano arrives in New York, teaming with Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel. Friends Luciano, Costello, Lansky, Siegel and Genovese fight their way up as drug smugglers and hit men. The leader of the group is Charles Luciano, nicknamed "Lucky". He got his nickname after Sicilian mob boss Salvatore Maranzano had him kidnapped and tortured. Luciano barely survived and a legend was born. During Prohibition, Luciano's crew makes a fortune.

Part 2: Equal Opportunity Gangster (1927-1931)
During Prohibition, Charles "Lucky" Luciano gains power in the New York underworld. In the 1920s, violence reigns in the streets of New York. Since alcohol is forbidden, moonshine and smuggling result in lucrative business for the mafia. Two Bosses Masseria and Maranzano start an all-out turf war, known as the Castellammarese War, and Luciano plans to kill them both. They die in quick succession, and in less than five months, Lucky has just taken out the two biggest mob bosses and becomes the king of New York.

Part 3: King of New York (1931-1935)
After taking out the two most powerful mob bosses in the city, Lucky, now 34 years old, plans to seize control of the New York Mafia. He takes over the New York mob, organizing The Five Families and forms a board of directors called the "Commission". They have the final say on all mob matters, from dividing up territories to ordering hits, and feuds were settled in underworld court. As Luciano's power increases, so does the heat from the Feds. Prosecutor Thomas Dewey has made it his mission to bring all mafiosi to justice, and Lucky is at the top of Dewey's most wanted list.

Part 4: A Rising Threat (1935-1936)
Charles "Lucky" Luciano is considered the most powerful mafia boss in the USA in the 1930s. He makes a fortune from prostitution, drug smuggling and racketeering. Soon after expanding his criminal operation to illegal prostitution, the kingpin has a network of up to 200 brothels and 1,200 prostitutes in the city. His decision to go into the prostitution business gives Thomas Dewey the opportunity to arrest him and put him on trial. After two months on the run, Lucky is arrested in his hideout in corrupt Hot Springs, Arkansas. Back in New York, he is out of bail facing charges of compulsory prostitution and plans his defense against Dewey for his trial on May 13, 1936 in Supreme Court.

Part 5: Exit Strategy (1936-1941)
Charles "Lucky" Luciano is found guilty of running a prostitution ring and goes to prison. He has to figure out how to run his empire from his 8 by 10 foot cell. Lucky must choose between Frank Costello, the "gentleman gangster" and Vito Genovese, the tough guy hoodlum as head of his gang. Even though Costello is smarter, Lucky makes him an underboss and promotes Genovese to acting boss. So Vito Genovese becomes a don, but not for long… When Genovese has to flee in 1937, Frank Costello becomes the most powerful gangster boss. Costello has extensive contacts with politicians, judges and police officers. Meanwhile, Lucky is determined to get out of prison and his opportunity may come from a battle soon to be waged halfway around the world.

Part 6: The Mob at War (1941-1946)
Even during his imprisonment, "Lucky" Luciano maintained his important contacts. As the US enters World War II, the military asks him to aid in the war effort. Thomas Dewey considers letting him go. Lucky writes a letter requesting parole to Dewey, the newly elected governor of New York, but after seven months, there's no response. The navy puts pressure on Dewey, but releasing Lucky would hurt his presidential aspirations, so after the war in 1946 he deports Luciano to Italy. Forty years after he arrived in America a penniless immigrant, Lucky is forced to leave the country he considers his home and leave his criminal empire behind. However, he remains a mastermind of the American mafia by organizing an international drug ring.

Part 7: New Frontiers (1946-1948)
Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel dreams of starting the gambling business in the late 1930s. After all these years setting up a mob stronghold in Los Angeles, Siegel has nothing to show for it. Together with his girlfriend Virginia Hill he is planning a spectacular casino in Las Vegas. His vision is a European-style mega hotel and casino that will attract celebrities, high rollers, and tourists willing to cough up thousands of dollars a night. He names it after his long-legged girlfriend Virginia Hill's nickname, The Flamingo. But the construction of the casino "Flamingo" devoured huge sums and flopped at the opening. The commission and his investors lose patience with him skimming money and decide the death of Bugsy Siegel. He was shot dead in his Beverly Hills home on June 20, 1947; 20 minutes after his murder, Lansky takes control of the hotel.

Part 8: End Game (1948-1962)
With no hope in returning to America, Lucky turns to his advisor Lansky and his acting boss Costello to keep his operation intact. A former Vincent Mangano underboss Carlo Gambino raises from mid-level gangster to the head of his own crime family. When Costello ends his reign as Luciano Family head, Lucky placed the organization he created in the hands of Gambino, the man he believes will lead the Mafia into the future. On January 26, 1962, Charles "Lucky" Luciano dies of a heart attack in Naples at the age of 64. Luciano's death signals the end of an era as one-by-one his original crew fades away into history. Genovese spends the rest of his life behind bars where he continues to run his crime family until he dies in 1969. Costello lives out his retirement in peace and passes away in 1973. Lansky retires to Miami Beach dying of old age in 1983 with only S37,000 to his name, but had millions in secret bank accounts. Luciano, Lansky, Costello, and Genovese, along with Bugsy Siegel left behind a legacy that forever changed America.
