The opening film [of the Japanese Film Week@The Film Society in New Zealand in 1975], Journey Into Solitude is very much an affair between an adoring camera and a radiant young girl, who runs away from her unmarried mother on a glorious summer's day and at first is carried along by the sheer joy of living. She meets a pilgrim, stays a while with a travelling theatre, learns to take advantage of the people who played the same game with her. Inevitably, she discovers the hardships of homelessness, illness and of nursing a grudge against her mother, and decides to try a modest life with a fisherman who has been kind to her. It's a charming, rather wistful, little fable
