Sugar (2004)

A provocative, challenging and bizarrely funny coming-of-age story set on the crystal-caked streets of downtown Toronto. On the eve of his 18th birthday, Cliff's (Andre Noble) 12-year-old sister Cookie sends him downtown with a skateboard, a spliff and a direct order to get laid.
"During the night, Cliff meets handsome hustler Butch (Brendan Fehr) and is quickly initiated into the hilariously dark and drug-fuelled arena of life downtown. The boys eventually discover the perks and perils of each other's worlds; their friendship evolves into romance, yet the notion of intimacy is foreign to them both.
Cliff longs for intimacy, but Butch's drug abuse and self-loathing soon eats away at their relationship, and the two boys part company to tragic results…

Sugar is a rare movie that features plenty of male nudity, but almost no sugar-coating to make it look dazzling or fantastic. This is all back alleys and public bathroom stalls. In the gay community it could be referred to as 'rough trade,' and Sugar proudly lets it all hang out in a defiant way. Its a form of homosexual rebellion against objectification and the idea that 'gay' means 'pretty.' It comes off feeling like a true story rather than a cinematic tall tale. It is a thing of beauty for its honesty and frankness in portraying the hustler scene. Most people will find it unsettling and a little gross, but that is the point. Prostitutes are not people who end up shopping on Rodeo Drive despite what Pretty Woman may have led you to believe. Their paths usually mirror Butch's ultimate fate in this movie rather than Julia Roberts. Both Brendan Fehr and Andre Noble give courageous, fearless performances. It's not going to appeal to all palates, but it is certainly worth a look. Sugar is not as sweet and idealized as most gay movies, and for that it feels revelatory. It is an epiphany painted in hues of the bittersweet.

-An Interview with Brendan Fehr: A 21-min interview with the guy who plays Butch at the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. As one reviewer pointed out, "Andre's poignant absence is almost more telling than Fehr's presence" (see next extra).

-A Tribute to Andre: A 4-1/2-min video homage to Andre Noble, the guy who plays Cliff, and who died at 25 soon after the film was finished, "of aconitine poisoning after accidentall ingesting monkshood while on vacation back home in Newfoundland", aka "after eating a flower on a camping trip while vacationing in his home country of Newfoundland". The homage includes clips of Andre's screen test, behind the scenes footage, and clips from the film.
