There are around 20,000 private primate owners in the USA and, for a few thousand of them, their monkey is not a pet - it is their child or their 'monkid'. For the 'monkid' families, this strange and controversial practise is everyday normality - monkeys are 85 per cent human after all.
My Child Is A Monkey (tonight on TV ONE at 9.30pm) looks at the growing 'monkid' phenomenon and, through the 'monkid' families and the wider 'monkid' industry, shows the challenges, problems and immoral practises inherent in private primate ownership.
For one 'monkid' owner, having a pet of his own was something he'd always dreamt of: "The reason for wanting a monkey started when I was a little kid. My father always had animals. He grew up in Africa and he was always around wild animals, and that's where my fascination began," he says.
This documentary takes a look at the 'monkid' industry, now big business in America: The monkid breeders who make huge profit from the babies who are prematurely ripped from their mothers; and the sanctuaries who rescue abandoned 'monkids' once their owners have tired of them, or have been attacked.
