Radio Free Steve is a post-apocalyptic comedy best described as Mad Max meets Smokey and the Bandit about a futurist radio pirate racing across the American Southwest in search of a music video career in "New Los Angeles." Originally shot in 1984 by the film's star, Steve Glenn, RFS sat unfinished until 1999 when acclaimed filmmaker Lars von Biers discovered Glenn's video epic and raised finishing funds.

Beginning as a documentary, a middle aged tech geek, Steve, is interviewed about a film he made in 1984. That film, which he still has on a VHS tape, is "Radio Free Steve". This and other segments near the end serve as a wrap around that frame the scifi tale as a movie within a movie. Texas and the entire US has become fascist, with no freedom of speech. Steve is a beer drinking trashy redneck loudmouth whose girlfriend Sheena is the same way. He enjoys killing radioactive mutants for fun by shooting them with a crossbow or running them over with his van. He's also the last radio pirate, broadcasting his illegal show, while there is no other media, only the sound of the Emergency Broadcast System. They travel around in his antenna-topped van, as he does his broadcasts, pursued by FCC bounty hunter Dirk, whose out to kill him. After his friend Bruce shows him a music video broadcast that intrigues him, Steve sets out to cross the Forbidden Zone to reach New Los Angeles, the only place he feels the signal could have originated. It is there he hopes to find a new center of culture and free media.
From the opening prologue: "In the year 1985 World War III devastated the United States. 100 million died in a few hours. The radioactive fallout caused many survivors to change into hideous mutants that roamed the highways in search of human flesh. The rest of humanity faced an uncertain future, isolated and alone. In 1989 a group of survivors banded together to broadcast a message of hope across the nation's airwaves. Then, after only a year of broadcasting, the remnants of the federal government came out of hiding and instituted martial law. The FCC shutdown all of the unlicensed broadcasters and replaced them with the terrible sound of the Emergency Broadcast System (E B S). After the FCC's ruthless extermination of the broadcasters, a few brave radio pirates went underground. By the end of the millineum, one lone pirate had survived…"
Featuring the music of Boards Of Canada, Trans Am, The Fucking Champs, The Prima Donnas, DJ Faust, Luna, Brown Whorenet, and Friends Of Dean Martinez.
I saw some really great stuff in 2000, but nothing came close to this one. RADIO FREE STEVE is the ultimate party movie for those that love Geek Cinema. It's an independent film take on early 80's action films and teen romances. Steve is a man who life has turned to garbage. The only shinning hope he has is with Lars Van Beirs, a European flavor-of-the-month director who believes in teh legend of Steve movie, a Road Warrior-like actioner Steve made when he was 17, over 15 years before. RFS is a movie where everything is manipulated by the filmmakers and nothing is at it seems. Some people get the joke, most do not. This is one where you really need to have an audience to fully appreciate it.IMDB Reviewer
