In six years, humanity has watched the equivalent of 1.2 million years of pornographic videos, and more than one hundred billion pages are visited every year on streaming sites. YouPorn and PornHub now account for 2% of the Internet bandwidth.
Dizzying figures that show the immensity of the financial transactions generated by this industry … Yet, the x-rated film business is going through a crisis. Production studios have closed their doors and the first victims are women. Thousands of actresses forced to shoot scenes twice as hard, for half the money.
The root of this upheaval are streaming platforms like YouPorn and PornHub, which offer an unlimited stream of free videos obtained through illegally pirated X-rated films. Behind these websites is a single multinational: a holding company with opaque practices, made up of companies domiciled all over the world. Financial fixtures, tax evasion, former bankers linked to Wall Street …
With PORNOCRATIE, Ovidie plunges us into an unfamiliar universe and denounces the human suffering and economic catastrophe that this new system has engendered.
