Popeye The Sailor Collection (1933-1943)

Popeye,infamous for his "muskles," spinach and pipe, was introduced to American audiences and became one of the most beloved characters in animation history. Because of his distinctive jargon and memorable catch phrases such as, "Thas' all I can stands, 'cause I can't stands no more," Popeye became a household name. A humble hero, Popeye was always true to his uncompromising moral standards and, although he looked like a tough guy, he only resorted to force when faced with a conflict that affected his loved ones. Even when close to defeat by the evil Bluto, Popeye's obsession with spinach guaranteed him victory over his competition.





Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 includes more than nine hours of cartoons – 58 (7- to10-minute) theatrical black-and white-shorts and two two-reeler 20-minute color cartoons. Some of the most memorable shorts from the DVD are the remastered "Blow Me Down!" and a cameo appearance by Betty Boop dressed as a hula dancer in the 1933 "Popeye the Sailor" cartoon, the short in which Popeye made his first animated appearance. The four-Disc DVD set also includes the Academy Award-nominated "Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor" and more than five hours of incredible bonus features

The 32 theatrical shorts included in this 2-disc package may be among the most influential and significant of the Popeye the Sailor series. These shorts were released from 1941-1943, and among them are Popeye’s war years cartoons, including one where he enlists. There are battles with Nazis in the comical sense and all sorts of patriotic World War II cartoons which are now historical artifacts as well as retaining their charm. Popeye uses his usual brute force and spinach to beat the enemy, just as he beat the bullies in the earlier cartoons.
