Flamboyant film producer Lawrence Woolsey plans to open his latest science fiction B-movie Mant in a small town in Florida just as panic over the Cuban missile crisis grips the community. Woolsey, ever the showman, thinks he can turn the crisis to his advantage.

Joe Dante harks back to his mentor Roger Corman as well as the great showman William Castle in this affectionate spoof of 50s and 60s B-movies and the way they were marketed. He also takes a sidelong look at the Cold War paranoia that gripped the States in the early 1960s which provides the film with some historical and social colour. Goodman is excellent as B-movie producer Lawrence Woolsey, the kids are less irritating than usual and Dick Miller turns up again. Lots of fun, especially the wonderful film-within-a-film, Mant.
