This thriller is based on the still politically sensitive story of the assassination of General Francisco Franco's heir apparent General Carrero Blanco. The General was to have been kidnapped by the Basque separatists, but when that proved too difficult, they arranged to bomb his car (with him in it) to smithereens. In order to do this, they had to dig a tunnel under a city street. The ensuing explosion blew the car over the roof of a nearby house.

    Ogro (1979)

The name of Italian filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo recently made the newspapers as it was revealed that his most famous work, 1966's The Battle of Algiers—depicting the doomed French colonial anti-insurgency campaign against the Algerian National Liberation Front, whose brutal but effective tactics would be denounced as "terrorism" by the French—was being afforded a special showing at the Pentagon, newly interested in the film's themes for the obvious reasons. In this work, Celli (Bowling Green State U.) surveys the entire career of the filmmaker, providing readings of Pontecorvo's early and late documentaries, as well as fictional major works such as The Battle of Algiers, Kapó, Burn!, and Ogro. While traditional concerns of film studies occasionally make their appearance in his treatment, Celli's main concern, as it was with Pontecorvo, are political themes, especially Pontecorvo's unresolved themes of justification of violence and terrorism for reasons of national liberation.

A Basque student I am living with right now explained a rough background behind the story of this movie and it made the experience of seeing it a whole lot more enjoying. I was astonished at the quality this movie had, the acting, directing, pacing, all impeccable and on a very impressive level. The story itself is simple, but the movie's tag line should be enough an explanation-an explosion that changed the history of Spain. The finale had me on the edge of my seat and the way the director chose to show certain time lapses was also very wise because the ending of the story, which indeed Was relevant to the movie's story, doesn't leave a bitter taste.

I highly recommend this movie, but before seeing it just find some rough info about this fascinating true story, it'll make the experience a whole lot more satisfying.

Starring former Italian Communist Party member Gian Maria Volontè Operación Ogro is a Spanish, French and Italian co production with an Italian, Gillo Pontecorvo, at the helm. It is a political thriller based on real events during the Franco regime in Spain in the 1970s. Released in 1979 it is inconceivable that such a film could have been made in Spain during the final years of the Franco Government.

    Ogro (1979)

Occasionally Ogro has a eurocrime feel about it but in truth it is a million miles away from exploitation cinema.
The events chronicled in this movie involve the ETA assassination of a probable Franco succcessor Carrero Blanco. To achieve this the ETA cell tunnel under a road and plant enough explosives to blow the target's car clear over the buildings in the street. This results in an absolutely mind blowing and spectacular cinema set piece.

    Ogro (1979)

This movie more that keeps the viewers interest. It draws us in to the detail of the story and engrosses us in the lives of characters. Ogro is a delicious piece of European political thriller that carries on a great film tradition that brought the world such titles as the delightful multi award winning Z. This is no mean feat for a movie that is largely based around a group of men digging a hole under a road.

    Ogro (1979)

Today, I'm not talking about the kingdom of God, but of a country that is this land. A country that doesn't exist, but nevertheless is ours. A country oppressed for centuries, and now crushed by the brutality of fascism. Now they ban us even from the right to pronounce our name in our native tongue: Euskadi. Country of the Basques. A word as sweet as any. Mother, land, soul. Does this mean that Euskadi is dead? Finished? No, it's not true. There are many who haven't given up fighting oppression and today still fight on in the shadows. I shall meet them tomorrow. I shouldn't tell anyone, but I trust you all. Not only because I know each and every on of you, but because, above all, you are Basques. I've tried for a long time to think only of God, but they keep on torturing and killing, and I cannot live the quiet life of a priest. So I must bid you farewell. Tomorrow I will have neither this class nor this cassock. I've asked God to forgive me. I ask you to pray for us. For this land, for freedom.
