A brilliant documentary taking a look at life in the favela slums in Rio De Janeiro where a daily conflict exists, some call it a war, between ghetto residents and the police. With a labour market which doesn't pay a living wage to low end employees and positions netting an average 10x more in the drug supply chain ever present, it's no wonder why people in Brazil's slums turn to a life of crime. They sell drugs to the wealthy middle class (where there is always a market) and buy military grade weapons on the black market (mostly from corrupt police).

In response to this, and the massive corruption in the police, Brazil's authorities use a special forces style police agency called BOPE to keep the worst favelas under control. Though by their own admission BOPE's primary mission is to use targeted murder and violence to control these gangs, rather than make arrests and punish through courts and prisons. BOPE's tactics, weapons and training all get examined, as do the drug gangs. Interviews with a very frank police chief, ghetto residents, average workers, established criminals and kids finding their feet on the first rungs of the drug trade combine to paint a very stark picture. Very much worth a watch, especially if you are interested in crime, sociology or a enjoyed Elite Squad, City of God or Bus 174.
