    Dario is a little publisher from Milano. He is joining the Mantova Festival Letteratura (Book fair) 2004. Marta, his unsatisfied wife, accompanies him. Leon is a French designer-photographer. While Dario is busy with his own business, Marta take a visit to the celebrated Palazzo Te; here under Giulio Romano's fresco representing Jupiter's erected penis she meets Leon. Immediately they become lovers and spend the entire book exhibitions' days making love almost everywhere. This liaison will have soon effects also on the regular one between Marta and Dario.

    I suppose I understand the young couple who apparently picked up DVD of this film because it was described as an 'erotic thriller'. Something lost in translation there, I think. And for those who take exception to the non PC and violent elements, I guess if this is your first Tinto Brass movie you could be forgiven for being taken aback that this is not all silky hand upon silky thigh to the drone of some appalling musak. But, come on everybody else, this is Mr Brass, this is Italian, so we get gutsy action, bottoms up, bottoms open and even bottoms on the toilet. True, we are given to understand that the leading lady is fantasizing/desiring all of this whereas it is of course, Mr Brass who is in charge of the fantasies portrayed, but then this is only a movie. Anna Jimskaia comes from Tashkent, Uzbekistan and has been a circus performer and gymnast, so no wonder she can bend that bottom high and so beautifully. Max Parodi is a little over the top as her failing husband but Riccardo Marino is suitably moody as her 'French' lover. This may be a bit vigorous for some, lifelike prosthetic penises make you wonder, why not the real thing but whilst perhaps not the ideal first date movie, I reckon you get what's on the can.

    From the mind of erotic film maker Tinto Brass comes this tale of newlyweds, Dario and Marta, who it seems are having a little trouble with their marriage.

    Dario, after just six months of marriage, has become comfortable and predictable and Marta is craving adventure and passion. When the couple find themselves in Mantua attending a literature festival, Dario is so busy networking he doesn’t notice just how bored and frustrated Marta has become. She soon finds excitement though with Leon and a whirlwind affair follows.

    Dario on discovering her diary is both torn apart and horny, not really wanting to believe his wife would cuckold him even though she has been hinting at it all along but still finding himself aroused at the idea of his wife with another man. Marta, revelling in the throes of her affair, the excitement of the moment, has to decide where her loyalties lie and when Leon finds himself falling in love with her, the stakes are raised even higher.

    Tinto Brass has a look and feel to his movies that stamp them as his own. He also always seems to find gorgeous, extroverted natural women to star in his films. This is no exception, Anna Jimskaia is hot and just that shade of slutty to make you believe her story.

    With the art of Guilio Romano as a backdrop as well as the city of Mantua itself, the film looks stunning. All of Tinto’s usual fetishes are there, the mirrors, the close ups of women’s bums and even a couple of déjà vu moments from his film Cheeky! – a boat scene, a sensual massage- but hell he does it so well, who are we to begrudge him? As well there’s his usual cameo appearance, this time discussing sex vs porn vs art. Brass makes movies that raise the bar (literally!) on what soft porn/erotica can be.

    And with Cult Epics behind this release, you get to appreciate not just the sexual aspects but the sheer beauty of his cinematography, of his set pieces. More than just a dirty old man, he’s a dirty old man with class.
